Engine Cadet
"I am a 21 year old cadet currently undertaking a 3 month trip on board the Maersk Rosyth; a four year old class III chemical tanker running between Rotterdam and Port Jerome which are two of the largest oil refineries in Europe. This vessel has a 7150kW B&W engine which is far different to the engine I worked with on my first trip which was a 60,000bhp Sulzer 8RT flex with revolutionary new technology.
A normal working day begins on the Rosyth at 0800h by taking the log, a daily check of pressures and temperatures from various machines in the engine room including three 1300bhp generators.
I am then assigned various tasks throughout the day, testing the boiler water ph level, or helping the second engineer with the main engine.
After dinner in the evening, the 4th engineer and I usually go to the gym, Maersk are very keen to keep their crews active. The gym is fully equipped with free weights and a variety of exercise machines. I usually spend an hour in there before retiring to bed with a book from the well stocked library or watching a movie, from the DVD locker, on my laptop."
